Karla Gudeon

Karla left a teaching career 25 years ago to pursue her passion for art full-time. Upon buying a printing press, Karla developed her distinctive approach to the age-old technique of hand-colored engraving, building upon the watercolor work she honed at Parsons School of Design. Her exquisite artwork includes original framed pieces of various Judaic themes, sizes and price-points, ketubot, wall hanging prints and accessories for use and display, including gifts such as coasters, notebooks and inscribed Honor Gifts on commission. Karla’s renowned Tree of Life and Season pieces have always been her signature images; both inspirational and meaningful.

Karla’s collection of one-of-a-kind, hand-painted, dry point engravings have been described as joyous, lyrical and deeply moving images. For each of her original designs, Karla incises the image she’s created onto a metal plate, which is then inked so that only black lines appear on the paper when pulled through the press. Karla often uses paper hand-made from all organic materials which provides a naturally elegant surface for her work. Karla’s images are brought to life by her talented artistry in painting each individual image with wondrous watercolors. Karla’s work is imbued with her spirit – in her words:

“Every day I wake up grateful for being able to create art. My studio is my happy place. It’s where I am my best self, spending my days living my life making beautiful things for wonderful people.”

Based in New York, Karla’s celebrated paintings are displayed in galleries and distinguished collections throughout the country and abroad. Her images have been commissioned for book covers, editorial design, stationery goods, digital media, award winning children’s books, and private collections.
